Infographic: More than you wanted to know about fat

Learn everything from the average percentage of fat in men and women to how much yoga you need to do to burn a pound of fat.

By Ann Tracy Mueller | Posted: January 28, 2013

Here at Ragan Communications, we’ve just begun our second weight loss competition, so I’d guess you could say many of us around here are more than a little bit obsessed about our weights, the calories we consume, the exercise we get, and more.

As for fat … well, yeah, isn’t that what we’re carrying around and trying to burn off?

This infographic from DegreeSearch.org includes some numbers to which my coworkers and I should pay attention.

  • An average woman 5 feet 4 inches tall weighing 166 pounds is carrying around 46.5 pounds of fat.
  • Cycling burns off calories faster than yoga. (Biking will do it in four hours and 20 minutes per pound of fat while yoga takes 17 hours and 10 minutes.)
  • Muscle and fat both burn calories. Guess which burns about three times as much? Hint: It’s not fat.
