Penny Smith got a new heart last year at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. The 35-year-old nurse had one request. She says “… I felt like it got me through half of my life and I needed to say goodbye to it,” the New York Daily News reports.
Recently, a friend of the transplant recipeient posted a photo of Smith and her old heart on the image-sharing site, Imgur, with this caption:
This is my friend Penny. She is holding her own heart. She has survived cancer and crippling heart failure but never lost hope.
In about two weeks, the photo was viewed more than 500,000 times on Imgur alone. Here’s a post from the Sharp HealthCare, the system where she was a
patient when she received her new heart.
