Visitors to the Mall of America may notice some bustling of activity this spring, as Mayo Clinic and the megamall prepare to join together to help
bring health care to people where it is convenient.
Mayo will open the Create Your Mayo Clinic Health Experience at the mall this summer, as a
partnership between patients and Mayo to improve their health and well-being. The mall will help Mayo gather input from the people they will
potentially serve, in preparation for a permanent Mayo Clinic facility planned at the mall in 2013.
Mayo has learned from market research that future health care won't be confined to hospitals and doctor's offices only. They want to make things more
convenient and provide access to Mayo health resources on a day-to-day basis.
What's more convenient and more fun than one of America's biggest malls—one huge playground for kids and a shoppers' delight for adults?
Imagine this: You're a little kid, getting ready for your off-to-school physical, knowing you're going to get poked in the arm with the necessary
immunizations. Then mom says, "You can ride the roller coaster afterward!" Fear, angst, and whining disappear, right?
The coming attraction
The current construction isn't for the permanent facility. But, what is planned now sounds like it fits right in at one of the Midwest's biggest

Why the Mall of America?
The Create Your Mayo Clinic Health Experience website says:
"Medicine needs to adapt to peoples' changing needs, including seeing patients where and when it is convenient for them. This project enables Mayo
Clinic to explore new delivery methods and allows more people to access Mayo Clinic without having to physically travel to one of our clinics.
"Like Mayo Clinic, the Mall of America is a destination that attracts millions of visitors from every state
and many countries. The Mall is an ideal gateway for many of those visitors to access Mayo Clinic in some nontraditional ways."
What is next?
Mayo doesn't currently plan a hospital at the mall. The website says, "Services (medical care and other) will complement, not replicate, Mayo Clinic's
services in Rochester and other locations."
We think the Mayo Clinic and Mall of America partnership is a pretty cool idea.
Is this the future of health care? Where else do you see health care planting itself in the coming years?
