As the haze of college begins to settle—and bills start to roll in—you should be deciding (if you haven’t already) where you’ll plant your roots for the early part of your career.
Good jobs, competitive salaries and a low cost of living are crucial factors when you’re searching for the perfect city.
It considers factors such as the number of residents under age 30, average salary, commute time and rental costs for one- and two-bedroom apartments.
Here are a few top cities, along with a handful of reasons The Balance included them:
The popular city in the Pacific Northwest boasts a low unemployment rate (2.3 percent) for those with a bachelor’s degree. Your starting salary will probably be nothing to sneeze at. The average salary for employees with less than one year of experience is $58,673, per PayScale . You’ll also be surrounded by people of similar age, as just under 20 percent of its nearly 725,000 residents are ages 20–29.
The fourth-fastest growing big city in the country is another prime location for recent college graduates. Though the average salary for employees with less than one year of experience ($48,570, according to PayScale ) is quite a bit less than Seattle’s, rents and overall cost of living are much lower. The city’s top employers are The Ohio State University, the State of Ohio and Ohio Health , and it’s home to Nationwide Insurance headquarters. Nearly 20 percent of its almost 882,000 residents are ages 20–29, and only 2 percent of recent college graduates are unemployed.
Among the reasons the state’s capital and fourth-largest city should be on the radar for freshly minted college grads is its large population of 20- to 29-year-olds. More than 19 percent of its 950,000 residents fall into this age range. It also boasts an attractive average salary for fresh industry newcomers: $51,501 for those with less than one year of experience, according to PayScale . Its low unemployment rate for residents with a bachelor’s degree (just over 2 percent) is also appealing.
