How to make patient empowerment a reality

There’s plenty of talk about empowered consumers and health care. Still, many hospitals and providers merely conceptualize the practice rather than implement it.    

Patient empowerment promises to help improve medical outcomes while lowering treatment costs. While technology revolutionizes the delivery of health care, many providers and corporations get in their own way.

This infographic says that if population health management is to work, consumers must take accountability for their own health, and “providers have to help them get there.”

Patient empowerment depends on:

  • Enablement

  • Strong partnerships between doctors and caregivers

  • A mutual understanding
