Teach parents—and kids—tips on summer water safety

Ten people a day die by drowning in the U.S. Most of these tragedies befall children, and many can be prevented.

Memorial Day weekend is the “unofficial start to summer,” the season that draws people to pools, lakes, oceans and other waterfronts.

It’s an important season for communicators who can share lifesaving information about water safety.

Children are especially at risk of drowning. This infographic reveals several frightening statistics:

  • One in five children who drown are 14 or younger.
  • Nearly 70 percent of drownings occur when one or both parents are supervising.
  • There are 10.6 million swimming pools in the U.S.
